Pros and Cons of Language Websites for Home Learning

The impetus for my research was that students in French Immersion classrooms often don’t have the opportunity to practice French at home and that homework can be challenging if there is no one else in the home who can speak French to help the student if they have questions. However, Language Learning sites are not always suited to the needs of the students. So here are the Pros and Cons of Language Websites for Home Learning.

PROS

  • Little to no cost for the students and/or teacher
  • Fun way to reinforce knowledge taught in class
  • If the program allows it, students can chat with each other and/or native speakers from around the world
  • Learning is personalised and students can work on specific areas of interest/challenge
  • Convenient to adapt to your students’ learning styles and needs
    • There are limitations to this as the student must be able to access the internet
  • Many programs allow teachers to provide feedback on students’ work and can create personalised lesson plans for students with certain needs
CONS

  • Not everyone has access to the internet or a computer
  • Can be challenging to grasp concepts without a teacher
    • Some programs do have tutors you can chat to
  • Might miss some conventions that pertain to Canadian French specifically that the teacher may cover in class
  • Easy to forget to practice and students can look up answers online without learning anything
