Privacy and Security Online

Today we had Jesse Miller give a talk today about threat assessment and privacy on the internet. It was a very engaging and informative session where I learned lots of new information. What I wanted to take away was the tips and tools for educators to not only stay safe for ourselves professionally, but also to help guide and support our students in their use of technology and the internet.

It is important as an educator that we give our students the right tools to ensure their safety and security online, and to engage with them in discovering the many uses for technology and how they can benefit the student. However, parents, students, and educators need to be aware of the repercussions of sharing media online and need to develop technology common sense so as to maintain an appropriate presence. It is also the teacher’s responsibility to structure their classroom to minimize distraction by respecting the space for cell phones and technology.

Use of Mobile Technology by Educators

  • teachers must not share student info/image on personal social media accounts
  • balance professional expectations
  • understand consequence in the online sharing of persona; info about students
  • assess ethos of care in social sharing
  • challenge co-workers to open dialogues
  • assess frustrations and opportunities for success
  • get permission to share valuable info
        • be wary of crossing lines as a professional with responsibility to students’ protection
